As a coach, I know statistics often do not tell the full story of a player's worth. Often, a kid who averages next to nothing in terms of points or rebounds can still have a profound impact on the success or failure of a team. For instance, one starter on a team I helped coach that went to Semi-State averaged 0.1 points per game. No joke. When Nat Newell called to get a roster for the Final Four game, he was trying to convince himself that this kid averaged 1.0 points, not 0.1. It was almost too bad to put in print. But this kid established what we wanted to do defensively each game without ever touching the ball. After the first defensive possession of the game, let's just say no one wanted to run through the painted area when he was there! With all that said, you need to score points to win a game. Here is a breakdown of the leading scorers that are Indianapolis-area kids who are D1 committed or who have D1 potential. This list includes their average and their high game for the season. These stats are only through January 3rd, so they're not totally up to date, but they do paint an accurate picture of the players' ability.
Andrew Smith (Covenant/Butler) - 24.5 (26)
Matt Kenney (Mooreville/Valpo) - 23.5 (29)
Terone Johnson (North Central/Purdue) - 23.4 (44)

Patrick Bade (Franklin Central/Purdue) - 17.9 (32)
Blake Beasley (Decatur Central) - 17.3 (26)
Damon Ellison (North Central) - 16.1 (27)
Chris Page (Plainfield) - 15.9 (25)
D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (North Central) - 15.9 (22)
Dominique Ferguson (Lawrence North/Kentucky) - 15.5 (23)
PJ Boutte (Howe) - 15.3 (25)
Kendall Griffin (Avon) - 14.3 (30)
Morgan Newton (Carmel/Kentucky) - 14.2 (26)
Stephan Van Treese (LN/Louisville) - 13.6 (21)
Blake Metcalf (Plainfiedl/Albany) - 13.6 (22)
Justin Reid (North Central) - 13.1 (20)
Jack Isenbarger (Zionsville) - 12.7 (27)
Tommy Eggleston (Heritage Christian) - 12.3 (21)
Torrey Nibbs (Brownsburg) - 11.9 (20)
Leland Brown (Noblesville) - 11.9 (25)
There is a quick glimpse of who is scoring buckets in the Indy-area. Terone Johnson's game of 44 points is the best output so far this year. Will anyone score more? We'll find out soon!
