Thursday Throwdowns: 1/15

There are three big-time games of interest tonight which feature some top-ranked teams and some talented players of interest. One of them is pushed back from yesterday due to poor weather, and hopefully, tonight's games will be played and the snow and ice will hold off. Here are the previews of tonight's games:

Bishop Dwenger (5-2) vs. Ft. Wayne South Side (2-6) - This game was on last night's docket but was postponed for weather issues. Dwenger is the number-five ranked team in 3A and features Notre Dame tight end recruit Tyler Eifert and 6'8" sophomore Tony Springmann, who is receiving increased attention from college coaches as of late. He recently went for 22 and 10 in Eifert's absence, and Purdue coach Matt Painter was in attendance for another one of his games. South Side features freshman sensation Raphael Davis who is reportedly close to some big-time offers, including one from the Indiana Hoosiers.

Bluffton (10-1) vs. Leo (7-1) - This Allen County Tourney matchup squares off top teams from their respective classes. Bluffton is the number-three ranked team in 2A, while Leo is number twelve in 3A. Bluffton has a real chance to knock off Luers in their Sectional this season, and Leo is having their best season in a while under coach Cary Cogdell, hearkening back to the days of Butler great Jon Newhouser. This one will take place at the Coliseum.

Cathedral (7-1) vs. Carmel (6-2) - Cathedral may be more highly ranked and even favored in this one, but the Greyhounds have won 22 straight at home. Cathedral has two big-name players in Kelsey Barlow, headed to Pudue, and big man Errick Peck, who has really come into his own this year as a dominant force on both ends of the floor. His lack of height at 6'6" may be what is making coaches hesitant to offer, but he is definitely a D1-caliber player. Carmel features many solid players, including senior and Kentucky football recruit Morgan Newton and 6'5" junior Scott Laskowski, the son of former IU legend John. The Greyhounds also have one of the state's top ninth graders in 6'10" AJ Hammons, another kid who IU has supposedly sent out an early offer to. This will likely me a tremendous matchup of traditional 4A powers.

Check back tomorrow to find the results of these great games!
