Best of the Best: Position Ranks

One of the most commonly asked questions I have gotten since starting P-Hoops is who I think is the best player in the state, in a respective class or area, or in general, about where kids size up across Indiana. I thought today would be a good time to give my rankings for each high school grade since I have a few extra hours with the day off from practice and scouting. I'm doing this while watching the Boilers take down Iowa at Mackey, so needless to say, I can't think of much I'd rather be doing: home from church, full of Famous Dave's barbecue, basketball on the tube, and my thoughts on high school hoops. Awesome to see all those IPS student athletes listed.

Kevin Rose and Kenny Enoch are also highly ranked on Hoopscoop, ESPN and Scouting Indiana publications.

Take a look at Johnny Marlin for 2011 point guard

Anonymous said...

Evan Maschmeyer plays the point for Jeffersonville, and led team to Chatard tourney championship scoring 20 with tons of assists and making all tournament team. Followed up with 17 and double figure assists against New Albany, 23 and double figure assists against Floyd Central, and led team to triple overime victory over Providence, scoring all points in the third overtime. He is averaging 17 per game but could make alot more, not selfish at all. You gotta consider this kid as he makes his teammates better. He has division 1 schools looking at him but being away from Indy is not on everyones radar. He's 6'3" and highlevel athlete.

Anonymous said...

Maschmeyer is 2011 class and a taller more talented than some listed point guards, better suited for the college level

p-hoops said...

you know, i totally forgot about maschmeyer. i have actually written about him from the jeff vs. new albany game. i am going to edit and include him on this list now. thanks!

also, where does marlin play so i can look out for him?

Anonymous said...

where would you have ronnie johnson (NC) in the 2012 class? i realize he's pretty small still - any indication that he'll put a few more inches on and be as tall as his bro?

Anonymous said...

How do you know all these players? Are you an AAU guy?

I've never seen something this comprehensive show up for free.

THANKS FOR THE WORK!

p-hoops said...

i know these guys from being a coach in indy, from seeing them play in season and out.

also, if ronnie johnson adds size and strength, he will be a god one in 2012. i saw him play a nice game against jeff earlier this year during the classic and was impessed.

i'm about to add a few more kids i forgot about to the list.

Nice List P Hoops. It would be nice if IU could get some of the top freshman talent. Ron Patterson looks tough.

p-hoops said...

thanks david. i think both IU and Purdue will be able to add some of the best Indiana has to offer in 2012. there are a ton of good players. the top ten i listed are all D1 imo.

Anonymous said...

John Michael Jarvis 2010 shooting guard. Better check his stats. Best shooter in the state.

p-hoops said...

where does Jarvis play so I can take a look and get some info? thanks!

Anonymous said...

John Michael Jarvis plays for Terre Haute South. Watching him and the Jake Odum play together is a real treat. Odum is by far the point guard in the state. The two of them togethter are super. Look what happened to Lawrence North

p-hoops said...

thanks! i am a big odum fan too, but i may give the nod to hulls over odum for best in the state at PG.

Anonymous said...

THERE IS A PLAYER I THINK IS A GOOD BALL PLAYER FROM MORRISTOWN NAME DYLAN LANGKABEL 6'3 GUARD IN THE 2012 CLASS

p-hoops said...

thanks, and i'll keep an eye out for dylan. is he on varsity this year?

Anonymous said...

yes and he had 34 points on saturday night

Anonymous said...

yes he is on varsity

Anonymous said...

Odum had 63 points this weekend!!!!!!!!!!

p-hoops said...

odum is sick. indiana state is getting a great one. he and kenney flew under the radar for sure.

Anonymous said...

dylan had 22points saturday

p-hoops said...

what position does he play? is he a point or a 2 guard? i would like to get a look at him.

Anonymous said...

he plays both but he is a 2 guard

starbucks said...

Levi Garner, sophmore 6'5" forward for Edgewood, he can handle the ball like a guard. He easily out performed Alex Prichett in the Edgewood/BNL Game. Prichett couldn't even guard Garner, they had to put a senior on him. Garner finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Also not so sure that Thomas Chandler, Bloomington South completely shut him down last weekend. By the way when Garner played Bloomington South last month he lead his team in scoring with 14 points against the number 1-4A team in the state. Garner also plays for Indiana Elite.

Anonymous said...

What are your thoughts about Tyler Greathouse? I know he plays for Columbus North and he is a Forward not a center.

Anonymous said...

i agree that Garner is a great player , but to say he easily outplayed Pritchett is not accurate. Pritchett picked up two fouls in the first two minutes after scoring easily on garner and sit the entire first half and and some of the the 3rd. He still ended up scoring 12 and 7 bds with limited action and the win at edgewood

p-hoops said...

got some stuff on garner on today's 2/4 update. i'd like to see him before i add him to the list, tho.

greathouse is a nice player with size and upside. he's listed at center since he plays that on his team. i know he projects as a PF but these are HS rankings.

Anonymous said...

Also got to have Riley Rapp from Guerin Catholic on that 2012 list. Frosh steps up and hits huge 3 point buzzer beaters against Brebeuf and HSE. This kid is a 2 from Carmel who would be starting for Greyhounds now. Tremendous athleticism as well as skill who makes plays all over the court. I know Galloway is sick this kid got away!

Anonymous said...

dylan had 29 tonight

Anonymous said...

dylan had 21 tonight

p-hoops said...

langkabel is playing very well right now! adding him to the list.

i've seen riley rapp play. i think he will be a good one, but right now he's kind of one dimensional as a shooter. if he improves his guard skills all around, he will be one to watch for.

Anonymous said...

dylan 20 points tonight

p-hoops said...

dylan is straight getting it done. i mentioned him the wrap-up for thursday night. good for him!

Anonymous said...

dylan had 21 today

Anonymous said...

rapp's defensive capabilities makes him solid at a 2, but his ability to handle the pressure is what makes him stand out to bigger schools

it will be interesting what he does in a tough area (NOblesville, carmel, HSE) and in a tough 2A sectional (Oak Hill, Tipton, Heritage)

Anonymous said...

Gary Harris - HSE
does everything, and every fundamental.

Anonymous said...

P-Hoops, There is NO BETTER guard in Indiana in the 2011 class than Nic Moore from Warsaw. If you have not seen him yet, you are missing out.

p-hoops said...

nic moore is great. haven't had a chance to update the rankings lately, but he needs to be on there FOR SURE!

starbucks said...

Anonymous you're a little annoying with your posting of your son's points. Let's be real here, he goes to a 1A school that is ranked 56th in 1A (out of 102) and has an overall ranking of 340 ou of 411 schools. It dosesn't sound like it takes much to 'shine' on that team.

starbucks said...

Oh, yeah and Anonymous your son's school record at Morristown is 5-12. p-Hoops did you really check this kid (dylan)/team out,-- I mean really!

Anonymous said...

How did Matt Howard make your list of top 2011? He doesn't even play varsity?

Anonymous said...

dylan is not my son but thanks have you check out dylan yourself or are you upset you son is not on the list and dylan had 14 last all in the second half

Anonymous said...

I've got news for both starbucks and dylans dad ( you know you are his dad don't deny it) p-hoops web and rankings don't mean crap. It won't get your kid a scholarship! Dylans dad why don't you post and let us know how far they get in the sectionals and what aau team your son gets on and how be does on that. We could care less how many points he every game against crappy teams.

Anonymous said...

I would put dylan up against your son anytime and no I'm not his dad and yes I know the ranking on here don't mean he is going to get a schlorship but you should not hate on a 15 year old kid

Anonymous said...

I think Kegan Clark from Jeffersonville should be on there. He has been putting up solid numbers all year.

p-hoops said...

did get to see dylan play, and i will be seeing a lot of him this summer to on gordon elite. he is a good prospect and i don't care what level you are playing, if you are consitenlty putting up between 15-25 a night as a freshman in Indiana, you can play. also, let's try to keep things positive and not bicker. and i agree about the rakings. they're strictly projections and will undoubtedly change. i appreciate the banter, but let's keep it kind and uplifting to the kids who read this, including the players themselves.

Anonymous said...

Chris Welker from Zionsville is not on the list? Coach only gives him avg 20 minutes per game...and leads Zionsville on pts (Leads team total by 34), rebounds (leads team rebounds total by 50), FT% (62-70), and 54% from 2pt, and 33% from 3pt.
He is getting avg 4-10 minutes less playing time than 4 other players on the Zionsville team, and still leads in stats.

p-hoops said...

i will reasses the rankings more throughly after the season ends, but for now, they are staying the same. feel free to keep me up to date on kids you feel belong in there, though!

Anonymous said...

How can you have Greg Rice under your 2009 allstar list for point guards when he clearly cant make the city top 5 in ANY category.(both lists are found on your site)Why dont you just give Big Larry a shout out and put someone deserving on your top 5 leaders in each class. one that can get the ball down the court and then has just as many assists as points.

Anonymous said...

I was told that dylan got a chance to go to the IU game last night

p-hoops said...

i don't know who you mean by big larry. also, i think greg rice is very good, hence having him as a top 5 point guard in his class. he will do well at IUPUI. Also, he's not on the all city team because he is not allowed to be. BD is a Wayne Township school, so he'd be on a Marion County team, not the City team.

Anonymous said...

and thats your opinion. is there any stats to back it up and remember you must include turnovers. :) and not all at iupui are happy with the acquisition either.

p-hoops said...

yeah, i agree, it's just my opinion. with all that's going on at BD and all rice is asked to do for them, i think he's a nice player. the 2009 class is so-so on PGs, and i don't think he'd be top 5 most years, but he is this one, IMO. again, who is big larry? larry smith?

also, for the guy who asked about langkabel's aau team, he will be playing for the newly formed Team Gordon, so that's pretty big.

Anonymous said...

good call on jesse barry... that kid has "in the gym range" the kid can shoot it from anywhere.

Also he an create for anyone he wants to on the floor

Anonymous said...

AJ Hammons, the freshman should not be on this list. He's big and from what i have seen that's about it. He's young so eventually maybe he will figure it out and know what playing with a little effort means. I know if i was cut from the Carmel team because he's 7 ft. tall and i am 6 ft. and i get to watch him walk up and down the court play after play i am one ticked kid. There are JV kids for Carmel that look much more deserving.

Anonymous said...

Got a chance to see two of your top five point guards play (Kenny and Odum) in the Sectional Championship at Terre Huate North High School. After hearing that Odum was nursing an injury, I thought that Mooresville and Kenny would dominate. Kenny showed flashes of brilliance but Odum was the STAR of the night. One of the best I've seen all year. Odum definitely deserves to be on your list.

Anonymous said...

You need to see Gary Harris from HSE. He is a starter for a regional team and he can do it all. He is one of the better defenders that I have seen all year and he is only 14 years old, he should be in the 8th grade! He is very solid and will become one of the better players in the state with no doubt in my mind!!

Anonymous said...

also like to add gary led hse to their FIRST regional.

p-hoops said...

hammons is visiting schools like IU for a reason. he is not polished yet, for sure, but he will be a top-100 kid by the time he's done. also, i want to see harris in the regional this weekend. heard lots of good things about him.

Anonymous said...

Jake Odum named Wabash Valley Player of the Year and Winter Male Athlete of the Year. Check out Tribune Star article on March 25, 2009.

Anonymous said...

Bruce Grimm is hands down a top five point guard in the entire state of Indiana, not just the senior class. Have you had the chance to watch him play at all?

Anonymous said...

Your list lost all credability when you failed to cite Bruce Grimm as a top five point guard in the class of 2009. I imagine the slight was driven by you never having the opportunity to see him play; it seems as if you're Indy based as there's defintely a bias toward that area in your picks. Anyway, you'll get a chance to see Bruce play this weekend in the 3A final. If he's not an All Star this summer it will simply be another case of the Star discounting players from outside Central Indiana.

Nice web site though - - my first visit.

2012 Nick Osbone muncie central, Kendall Waters pendleton check out conference stats for these two

Anonymous said...

Awesome to see all Indy kids but osborne from muncie central and waters from pendleton should be on 2012. Waters made all area as a freshman and all conference can you tell me any of those ips kids done that

The Shep said...

After his state game in 3A Bruce Grimm Jr has to be in the top 3 in your point gaurds. The kid put on a one heck of a show at the state. I told everyone i would them a coke if he is not an All star..

Anonymous said...

The Dylan Langkabel kid from Morristown is decent but is not in the top 25 freshman in the state. The kid only put up numbers because he play at a 1A school. He doesnt play anyone that is half way decent. He couldnt even score 10 points on smith-rivera and thats a fact.

Anonymous said...

The Indy Ball tournament is this weekend in indianapolis. Indiana Elite South who has alot of talent on their team will take on Eric Gordon Elite at like 1:30 at North Central.. Alot of talent will be there, talking to one of the coaches, Bower from Bloomington south and Alvis from Shelbyville can put up big numbers on the board. You should check it out.

Anonymous said...

I too heard Indiana Elite South was tough this year. I heard that TJ Bell from Charleston Illinois who is a top twenty recruit in the nation plays on Indiana Elite South.

Anonymous said...

eric gordon elite beat indiana elite south

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure Indiana Elite South only lost by three and they didnt have Dylan Alvis or Tj Bell there.

Anonymous said...

it is still a loss the eric gordon team only had 1 or 2 practices

Anonymous said...

If they played later in the year with both of them there, indiana elite south would win by atleast 10

Anonymous said...

Check out Paul Bayt from Cathedral High School

Anonymous said...

dylan scored 39 against syf saturday

Anonymous said...

parents shouldn't post their sons stats...

Anonymous said...

where was paul bayt this weekend?

Anonymous said...

If anyone knows of any prospects Indiana State may be talking to, please let me know at SycamoreHoops.com.

http://www.sycamorehoops.com

Anonymous said...

eric gordon indy stars didn't even make it to the gold bracket at the best of the midwest divison and they are suppose to have some top players in the state? you should reconsider that.

Anonymous said...

Dylan Langkabel=great kid that works real hard in the gym....watch morristown too...they could have a great year...with a few hard working freshman and other upper classmen are stepping up!

Anonymous said...

Dylan is a good kid, but doesnt make him a great basketball player. He is an I first player that only cares about his stats and not his teams record. He will get the stats, but I cant say he is a good teammate

Anonymous said...

what about kellen duhnam and jeremy jenkins for class of 2012??? kellen goes to phh and jeremy goes to frankton

Anonymous said...

Kyle Sanders 6"7 of Knox ( northern Indiana) is a damn good poward forward, averages 20 points a game. Very exciting to watch play.

Anonymous said...

Have you heard of Kyle Stidom from Greenwood Christian for the 2012 class?
