There were some fantastic games last night, and some amazing individual performances of note across the state last night. Also, the Indianapolis City Tournament got underway last night and there were interesting results there. Let's take a look at the games previewed yesterday, as well as some other top individual performances.
City Tournament Games
Cathedral 70 - Chatard 58 - Point guard Jarrett Hamilton has had back-to-back huge games. A few days after scoring 27 points in a comeback overtime win at Carmel, Hamilton led the Irish (9-1) with 23 points. Senior big man Errick Peck had another great game with 17 points, while Purdue-bound wing Kelsey Barlow notched 15 points. The Trojans (5-6) were led by 6'4" forward Evan Huxhold with 19 points, while Austin Bluitt added 13 points.
Heritage Christian 67 - Manual 52 - The Eagles (9-1), the number four ranked team in 2A, got a huge game from 6'5" senior guard Tommy Eggleston, who went off for a season-high 29 points. He had five threes on the night, including four of them in the third quarter, when Heritage went on a 25-11 run to put away the Redskins (1-11) for good. Senior forward Morgan Cook added 16 points for the Eagles on 6-7 from the field and 4-4 from the line. Freshman phenom Joel Smith had another nice game, scoring seven points on 3-4 from the field and 1-2 from the line. Toto Nance led Manual with 20 points, including four threes, all in the first half.
Northwest 58 - Covenant Christian 43 - Playing without the services of 6'10" Butler-bound senior Andrew Smith, the Warriors (5-6) struggled to handle the pressure applied by the Space Pioneers (8-5). Covenant was plagued by a slow start, trailing 13-4 after the first quarter, and then 27-15 at half. Senior guard Eric Prather led a balanced attack from Northwest, going for 12 points. Jeff McClintic had another nice game for the losing side, notching 21 points in defeat.
Broad Ripple 89 - Deaf School 34 - The Rockets (6-5) got a big game from the other Patterson, Armond Patterson, who had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman sensation Ron Patterson did his thing too, scoring 17 points on the night. Sophomore Steven Jamison had another strong showing, controlling the game from the points, distributing the ball, and scoring ten points. Deaf School (7-3) was once again led by high-scoring guard Gabriel Paulone, who had 19 points, a shade below his average of nearly 26 a game.
Howe 92 - Crispus Attucks 42 - The Hornets (8-3) just had too much firepower for Attucks (2-7) to match. Junior wing Jordan Manuel led the attack for Howe, scoring 24 points on the night. Sharpshooting junior guard Andre Hampton added 18 points, while wings Kenny Enoch and Damone Eubank each had 12 points apiece.
Other Games
Southport 51 - Warren Central 50 - A few days after playing in the Marion County Tournament finals, the Warriors (8-6) suffered a letdown at the hands of the Cardinals (7-5). Jake Shirvan made his only bucket of the night in the decisive possession of the game, nailing one with 45 seconds to play, and stealing the win for Southport. Freshman Kellon Thomas had a solid game as well, scoring seven points in the win.
Evansville Harrison 79 - Evansville Bosse 74 (OT) - After leading by as many as eleven points in the second half, Harrison (8-4) needed overtime to hold off Bosse (6-7) and secure another SIAC win. Harrison was led by Damion Duckworth with 25 points, while Bosse got a double-double from Brandon Durrett with 22 points and 12 boards.
Roncalli 65 - Lutheran 44 - Lutheran (6-5) got twenty points from Andy Denecke, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Rebels (7-3). Senior point guard Aaron Evans had another fantastic game for Roncalli, scoring 17 points in the win.
Decatur Central 64 - Avon 44 - The up-and-down nature of the season continued last night for the Orioles (7-5), who have struggled to put together back-to-back solid performances. Senior Indiana All-Star candidate Blake Beasley led DC (10-2) with 18 points. Avon got eleven points from 6'7" freshman wing Austin Burgett, while sophomore Kendall Griffin added seven points.
Other big performances of note:
* Senior big man Jonathan Nwannunu led Merrillville over LaPorte with 18 points.
* Princeton stayed undefeated on the season beating Gibson Southern behind strong performances of sophomores Dontray Chavis (21 points) and Jalen Packer (17 points).
* Freshmen Kevin Ferrell (16 points) and JB Rapp (11 points) led Park Tudor to a win, giving coach Darnell Archey hope for the future.
* Russell Byrd scored 24 points as Blackhawk lost to FW Wayne. The Generals were led by Kam Bright, who had 13 points.
* Snider kept rolling behind 18 points from Jonathon Sims and 17 points from Bradley Sneary.
* Ft. Wayne North Side got another win, and got 26 big points from senior guard Justin Jordan, who is sure to be a late D1 recruiting target, and has been mentioned with IU as of late.
* Another of the state's top freshmen, Raphael Davis of Ft. Wayne South Side, had a big game last night with 19 points.
There are several more great games this week at the City Tournament moves into the second round. Check back later for more on the best games of the week!
