Poll of the Week: 1/12

Hey hoops fans! With the high school basketball season about halfway over, I though now would be a good time to ask a pertinent question: Who do YOU think will be this year's Indiana Mr. Basketball? The award is the most coveted individual award a player can get in this great basketball state, and the competition for the accolade is as stiff as ever. I have selected three main contenders for the 2009 Mr. Basketball.

Derek Elston - PF - Tipton HS - Derek, a 6'9" IU recruit, is having a fantastic season for the Blue Devils, the number one ranked team in 2A. He is averaging nearly 21 points and 11 rebounds a game, leading Tipton to a 9-1 record so far.

Jordan Hulls - PG - Bloomington South HS - While his stats may be somewhat less impressive than other candidates, Hulls may be more important to his team than any one player in the state. He is averaging around 14 points, seven assists, and five rebounds a game for the Panthers, the top team in 4A and the number 34 team in the nation. Hulls will stay home and play for IU next year.

Scott Wood - SG - Marion - Wood's scoring statistics are ridiculous this year, recently having back-to-back games of over 30 points. He is the leader for the Giants, a top-ten team in 4A. He is headed to NC State next year.

There are many other deserving candidates as well, including Stephan Van Treese (Lawrence North), Patrick Bade (Franklin Central), Matt Kenney (Mooresville), Jake Odum (Terre Haute South), Colt Ryan (Batesville), DJ Byrd (North Montgomery), and Errick Peck (Cathedral).

So who do you think deserves the award? Vote on the poll on the right hand side of the page, and post a comment here on why you voted as you did. If you choose "Other," post who you would have picked and why. Thanks hoops fans!

Hulls is producing those stats while playing in only about 3 quarters a game. South is such a talented team, they have blown out every team they have played. His stats don't even begin to show his value to the team. The kid brings back old-school basketball, with great fundamentals. I can think of no better representative for Mr Basketball than Jordie. He is humble as can be, straight A's, polite, sincere, with the tenacity of Bird, the heart of Coverdale, the character of Benson, and the work-ethic of Alford. He may not post the numbers others do, that is not his goal. His goal is winning, where no one will post anything close to what this kid has done. High-school, AAU, bitty-ball, you name it, the kid knows how to win. And, for me, he should hands-down win the honor (and IT IS an Honor, and should be treated as such, with the responsibility it entails) to be named Mr Basketball. There will be no better representative. Character, leadership, integrity, ... if you know the kid, there really is no other choice.
