Tuesday's Top Tips: 1/20

There are a few great games to look forward to tonight on Tuesday, January 20th. It seems unbelievable that the month is already two-thirds over, and that we are rapidly approaching postseason play. Starting tonight is the Indianapolis City Tournamet which will feature some top teams and elite players. Let's take a look at some of the best games across the state!

Andrean (4-5) vs. Chesterton (6-4) - This matchup should be a good one. Chesterton boasts a nice record thanks in large part to the strong play of 6'9" sophomore Mitch McGary, who has come onto the radar of college coaches, including some in the Big Ten, as of late. McGary is part of a crew of solid big men in the 2011 class, including guys like Washington's Cody Zeller and Dwenger's Tony Spingmann.

Avon (7-4) vs. Decatur Central (9-2) - The Orioles are having their best season in a while, led by the strong play of sophomore guards Kendall Griffin and JuJuan Sarver, as well as by freshman phenom Austin Burgett. DC is also on top of their game and are led by potential Indiana All-Star senior Blake Beasley, a 6'5" do-it-all forward.

Connersville (6-2) vs. Jay County (7-0) - Connersville, the high school home of Butler standout Matt Howard, has rebounded nicely after a down season last year. Jay County is one of the big surprises this year, boasting an undefeated record and a number-14 ranking in 4A.

Lutheran (6-4) vs. Roncalli (6-3) - Lutheran is the best 1A team in the Indianapolis Metro area and has a chance to be a factor in the postseason again like last year, when they made a run to the State Finals. Roncalli is a 3A power, led by senior point guard Aaron Evans, one of the most underrated players in the state.

Southport (6-5) vs. Warren Central - Southport features super freshman Kellon Thomas and is always very competitive. Warren Central is coming off a solid run to the finals of the Marion County Tournament, where they fell to 4A #2 North Central by ten.

City Tournamnet Games of Note

Attucks (2-6) vs. Howe (7-3) - The high school alma mater of Oscar Robertson is still in rebuilding mode after rejoining the IHSAA ranks recently. Howe boasts a roster full of D1 talent, including juniors Jordan Manuel and Andre Hampton and sophomores PJ Boutte and Isaiah Hill.

Broad Ripple (5-5) vs. Deaf School (7-2) - Deaf features one of the top scorers in the state in Gabriel Paulone, who pours in 25.8 points a game. The Rockets have two of the top underclassmen in the state in sophomore guard Steven Jamison and freshman Ron Patterson.

Manual (1-9) vs. Heritage Christian (8-1) - Manual is continuing to struggle, and their season has been made more complicated by the unfortuante death of senior guard PJ Robinson. Heritage is having another successful season, ranked number four in 2A, and are led by seniors Tommy Eggleston (13 ppg) and Morgan Cook (10.5 ppg), and by one of the best freshman in the state in 6'6" wing Joel Smith.

Northwest (7-5) vs. Covenant Christian (5-6) - Covenant seems to have shut down big man Andrew Smith, a Butler signee, for the time being to let him recover from a fractured foot. He attempted a comeback last week, but he was gimpy and needs more time to heal. Northwest has been playing well as of late and looks for that to continue against the short-handed Warriors.

Cathedral (8-1) vs. Chatard (5-5) - This parochial matchup is always a good one regardless of records. Chatard is led by a trio of slashing, sharpshooting guards in Taylor Wayer, Austin Bluitt, and Pat Kennedy. Cathedral is coming off a thrilling come-from-behind overtime win on the road against Carmel. The Irish are led by seniors Errick Peck, a low block scoring and rebounding machine, and Purdue-bound wing Kelsey Barlow.

Check back tomorrow for updates on how these top tilts went down, and who played well!
