Update on Games: 2/6

Great games tipped off all across the state last night, and the evenings high expectations did not disappoint. There were many close games, including a few that went to overtime, and awesome individual performances. One performance of note was an amazing triple-double in an IPSAC showdown. Let's take a look at the games P-Hoops previewed yesterday, and also a look at other top performers of the night.

Lafayette Jeff 90 - Avon 84 (OT) - The Bronchos (12-7) got a big home win over the struggling Orioles (7-9) in overtime. Junior guard Jesse Berry had another huge game, going for 46 points, including a pair of treys. Avon had several double-digit scorers, including sophomore Kendall Griffin with 18 points and 6'7 freshman Austin Burgett with 16 points. Avon's once-promising season is currently off-track, but with their talent and coaching, they can still right the ship.

Lawrence North 69 - Carmel 58 - The Wildcats (16-2) led by more than twenty and ran away with the revenge win over the visiting Greyhounds (9-5). Junior forward Dominique Ferguson led LN with 22 points, and senior Stephan Van Treese added 15 points and six boards. Carmel guard Alex Payne led the Greyhounds with 18 points, while Morgan Newton added ten points and seven rebounds.

Valparaiso 59 - Chesterton 32 - The Vikings (13-2) took command in the decisive third quarter where they outscored Chesterton (9-6) 23-2. Valpo got twelve points from both Jerrick Suter and Hayden Humes, and Humes added seven rebounds as well. Sophomore big man and big-time college recruit Mitch McGary struggled to six points, but did contribute nine boards in the losing effort.

Frankfort 59 - Danville 56 - A buzzer beating three pointer from Troy Porter gave the Hot Dogs (11-4) a huge victory over the visiting Warriors (10-4), their seventh straight win. Porter scored 13 on the night, but Frankfort was led by high-scoring forward Stevie Loveless, with 27 points and ten boards. Junior big man and Purdue recruit Travis Carroll led Danville with 27 points and nine rebounds.

Forest Park 72 - Evansville Mater Dei 62 - The Rangers (10-4) continued their hot streak, moving to six wins in their last seven games. Senior forward and Southern Illinois recruit Jordan Myers led Forest Park with 19 points, while Casey Van Winkle added 17 of his own. Mater Dei got 17 points from Matt Coudret.

Evansville Harrison 53 - Evansville Memorial 48 - Memorial, the number two team in 3A, lost their second in a row to fall to 11-3 on the year. Harrison (10-4) won their fourth game in a row behind 16 points from senior guard Kendal Brown. Harrison held a commanding 35-19 edge in rebounding, and led by as many as fifteen, but had to stave off a late comeback attempt led by Trev Wilgus, who finished with 17 points.

Heritage Christian 62 - Triton Central 41 - The visiting 2A number three ranked Eagles (12-2) put on a defensive clinic in this one, taking command in the first quarter by holding the Tigers (8-7) to four points in the frame. Heritage got 20 points off the bench from senior guard David Reynolds, and 6'4 senior forward Morgan Cook added 15 of his own. Tommy Eggleston scored only eight points, but contributed a dozen boards and several assists in the win. Paul Stites led Triton with 12 points.

Northwest 87 - Howe 73 (OT) - The Space Pioneers (9-8) got a huge IPSAC win over the visiting Hornets (9-5), who are a highly ranked and talented 3A squad. Junior guard Ronald Ross simply went off in this game, registering a ridiculous triple-double of 17 points, 21 rebounds, and 15 assists. The Hornets got 18 points from sophomore point guard PJ Boutte and junior forward Jordan Manuel scored sixteen. Northwest outscored Howe 22-8 in the extra frame.

Guerin Catholic 94 - Cardinal Ritter 59 - This game did not look like the rout in turned into early on, as the game was tied at 12-12 after the first quarter. Guerin's hot shooting took over from that point on, as senior guard Ryan Nowicki tallied 28 points, moving him over the 1,000 point mark in his career with the Golden Eagles (10-7). Guerin also got another solid game from Michael McMahon who scored 18 points. The Raiders (9-4) were led by Tyrone Walker's 21 points.

North Central 77 - Terre Haute North 63 - The Panthers (17-1) got 19 points apiece from junior Terone Johnson, a Purdue recruit, and freshman D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera. Johnson knocked down four three pointers in the game. Senior wing Damon Ellison also added 18 points of his own. The Patriots (7-9) were held in check, as their big gun, 6'8 sophomore Justin Gant, finished with only eight points.

Pike 67 - Bloomington North 63 - Playing without star sophomore Marquis Teague, the Red Devils (9-5) got a big conference win over the Cougars (8-7) on the road. Sophomore Chandler Thomas scored a career-high 18 points, while freshman RJ Hunter added 16 points. North was led by junior guard Julian Boatner, who scored 30 points in the loss.

South Bend Clay 66 - South Bend Riley 59 - Clay (13-4) came from 13 back to defeat the home squad from Riley (11-4), who had won six straight games. Senior guard Kameron Stevens knocked down six free throws in the final 1:05 to seal the deal from Clay. Stevens finished with ten points, but Brad Cameron led the Colonials with 29 big points.
