Update on Games: 2/17

With a full night of games being played on Tuesday, there were a bunch of amazing performances and big wins for many teams across the state. Let's look at a recap of the dynamic dozen previewed yesterday, as well as a few highlights of other top game results and individual scorers.

Carroll (Flora) 61 - Frontier 51 - Despite being on the road, the Cougars (14-2) got back in the win column after their embarrassing loss to Tipton last week. They have only four games remaining on the schedule, including a season finale against conference rival and 1A powerhouse Lafayette Central Catholic. The Falcons (11-7) could not make use of their home court, falling for the fourth time in their last five games.

Ft. Wayne North Side 62 - Ft. Wayne Wayne 58 - The Redskins (13-5) made use of some hot outside shooting from senior guard Justin Jordan on their way to a big area and Summit Conference win. Jordan had four three pointers on his way to a game-high 20 points to lead North Side to the victory. The Generals (10-7) continue to slide, losing their fourth out of five.

Indian Creek 79 - Heritage Christian 75 - The Braves (11-7) simply could not be stopped on their home floor on "Hawaiian Night," winning their seventh in a row. The Eagles (12-5) the number seven team in 2A, could not make use of the defense that helped them rise to as high as third in the rankings earlier this year, allowing a season-high 79 points. Senior guard Kyle Bradley had 28 points in the upset, including at least 12 free throws with only one miss, his last attempt. Brett Brunson added 14 points in the win. Heritage, who has lost four of five, got 18 points from senior Morgan Cook, 14 points from senior David Reynolds, and 13 points from senior Tommy Eggleston. Heritage must right the ship as they head into Sectional play if they hope to achieve the lofty goals they had only a few weeks ago.

Lawrence North 74 - Plainfield 58 - The Wildcats (18-2) got revenge for their loss to the Quakers (12-6) from last season. Plainfield lost for only the second time in their last eleven games, as they simply could not keep pace with all the scoring options of LN. Senior forward Stephan Van Treese led the Wildcats with 20 points, while junior Dominique Ferguson added 17 of his own. Sophomore Ryan Taylor chipped in with fourteen. Plainfield got 19 points apiece from Blake Metcalf and Brian Mucho in the loss.

North Judson 66 - Mishawaka 65 (OT) - The Blue Jays (14-3) won their seventh straight game, as they got a huge win on their home floor over a quality 4A opponent. North Judson got 15 points from Drake Barnett and 14 points from Luke Gross in the victory. The Cavemen (13-6) lost their second in a row, but were led by Ryan Benner, who scored a game-high 23 points in defeat.

Marion 86 - Monroe Central 61 - The small town school kept it close through three quarters, as the Golden Bears (14-4) trailed by just one, 55-54, at the end of the third quarter. The Class 4A power from Marion (16-2) used a 30-7 run in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Marion was rolling early, as senior JaRob McCallum had 17 points in less than seven minutes, but a hard fall on his tailbone forced him out of the rest of the game. From there, Scott Wood and Mikel Brigham picked up the slack. Wood finished with 30 points, and Brigham had 17 points and 15 rebounds. The number eight team in 1A fought hard until the end, led by Trey Thomas, who had 17 points.

Munster 50 - Chesterton 44 - This one did not look promising for the Trojans (9-8) in the early going, as they trailed the Mustangs (16-1) at halftime by a score of 27-14. A 15-2 start to the third brought Chesterton back into the game, but their rally fell short at the end. One main reason for the Mustangs' win was the play of their bench, which outscored the Trojans 22-0 on the night. Joe Crisman had 14 points in the win, and Brian Stolarz had 12 points and five rebounds. Chesterton was led by Tommy Peller who had 18 points and six assists, and sophomore big man Mitch McGary had 11 points and ten rebounds in the losing effort.

Danville 61 - North Montgomery 53 - In a match-up of two future Boilermakers, the young gun, Travis Carroll, got the upper hand on the elder statesman, DJ Byrd. Carroll's Warriors (13-4) got a much needed win giving them six in their last ten tries. The 6'10 junior led the way for Danville with 22 points and 15 rebounds, and sophomore transfer Tyler Hall added 18 of his own. Byrd had big number for the Chargers (13-4), scoring 37 points on 12-32 shooting, which was two-thirds of North Montgomery's total team shot attempts of 48. Only two other Chargers scored in the game. The loss put a skid on the Chargers seven game win streak.

Hamilton Southeastern 68 - Pike 58 - The Royals (12-6) continue to roll, winning their sixth consecutive game, getting hot in time for postseason play. HSE got a great game from forward Charlie Duffy, who had 17 points and 12 rebounds on the night. Sophomore guard Marquis Teague scored 15 points in the loss, and Khristian Smith added 14 of his own.

Rochester 70 - Triton 64 - In another match-up of big vs. little, the larger school took down the smaller one. The Zebras (15-2), the number four ranked team in 3A, got 26 points from Bruce Grimm, Jr. to get a nice road win over the Trojans (16-2), the number two team in 1A. Triton was led by Griffyn Carpenter with 21 points in the loss.

Warsaw 63 - South Bend Clay 56 - Sophomore point guard Nic Moore led the way for the Tigers (16-1), the number nine team in 4A. Moore scored 20 points and dished out seven assists in the win, and junior Justin Clemens added 14 points on the night. Clay got some good shooting from Brad Cameron and IWU recruit George Jones who combined for seven treys, but the rest of the team was cold, making zero shots from outside (7/21 total). Cameron had 22 points and Jones had 17 in defeat.

Washington 35 - Southridge 33 - This defensive battle came down to the wire, with the Raiders (13-4) unsuccessfully attempting to hold the ball and kill the clock at the end. They were up by a score of 33-28 in the final frame, but the Hatchets (16-2) scored the final seven points, including two final baskets by Wade Collins and Cody Zeller to escape with a win. There were only 57 total field goal attempts in the game, with Washington going 13 for 37 and Southridge going 12 for 25. Zeller led the way for the winners with nine points.
