Highlights of the Day: Saturday, 2/7

P-Hoops had out-of-town family visiting this weekend, so sorry for the delay in posting the best that Saturday had to offer. There were a bevy of great games that went down Saturday, all throughout the day, so let's take a look at some quick recaps of some of the top teams and performers of the day.

* Cathedral got their second win over Heritage Christian 50-41 behind 12 points from Kelsey Barlow and 11 points from Errick Peck. Heritage star Tommy Eggleston, beset with strep throat, played limited minutes. David Reynolds had another nice game of 11 points, while Durrel Davis led the Eagles with 14 points.

* Tipton's Derek Elston, an IU recruit, bounced back with a 19 point and 16 rebound effort against Taylor after Friday's defensive standoff against Northwestern, in which he scored 11 points and had five boards.

* Avon beat Ben Davis behind Kendall Griffin's 19 points and Austin Burgett's 16 points. IUPUI recruit Greg Rice had 12 points for the Giants.

* Carmel beat up on a hot Zionsville team, getting a solid 12 points from 6'10 freshman AJ Hammons. Senior Morgan Newton added ten for the Greyhounds, while junior Jack Isenbarger led the Eagles with ten.

* Chatard beat Broad Ripple, getting a balanced scoring attack led by Taylor Wayer with 21 points. Sophomore Steven Jamison led the Rockets with 33 points, including four treys, and freshman Ron Patterson added 18 of his own.

* Columbus East got a huge game from Austin Whitted, who knocked in six threes on his way to 41 points in a win over Franklin.

* Danville got back in the correct column with a win over Brebeuf, led by Travis Carroll's 18 points and 12 rebounds.

* Decatur Central won again, this time over Beech Grove, led by Blake Beasley, who had 19 points, and 12 rebounds.

* Patrick Hopkins led Kokomo with 13 points as the WildKats beat Lebanon. They losing side was led by freshman Trey Hendrix with 15 points.

* Lafayette Central Catholic rolled over Bethesda behind 30 points from Dru Anthrop.

* Lapel got back on the winning track, beating Tri. They were led by Chandler Guion with 15 points, while Logan Ingle added 12 of his own.

* Mooresville's Matt Kenney, a Valpo recruit, had another huge game of 36 points in a win over New Pal.

* Plainfield beat Northview, as Blake Metcalf scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Brian Mucho added 19 points.

* Bishop Luers continues to sit atop the 2A class, winning handily over South Bend Joseph's behind 35 points from Deshaun Thomas.

* Evansville Harrison lost to Jeffersonville, but had a nice game from senior Kendal Brown, who scored 28 in the losing effort.

* Washington beat Jasper in a defensive battle. Sophomore Cody Zeller, recently offered by IU, had eight points and six boards.

* Bowman Academy, the number one team in 1A, beat LaPorte LaLumiere. They were led by freshman sensation DeJuan Marrero, who had 23 points, nine boards, four blocks, and two steals.

* Lafayette Jeff beat West Lafayette in double-overtime. Junior Jesse Berry had another big game of 32 points, including two game-clinching free throws.

Those are just a few of the best performances from the second set of games this weekend. This week has a full docket of huge games as the basketball season rolls on towards postseason play!
