Update on Games: 2/12

WOW! There were lots of great games and performances by teams and individuals all across the state of Indiana last night. Let's take a look at the recaps of P-Hoops twelve featured games, as well as a look at other highlights, including one player who nearly reached fifty and went over the 2,000 point mark in the same game! Without further ado, here's a look at the recaps of the dynamic dozen from Thursday, February 12th!

Anderson 56 - Muncie Central 44 - The Indians (13-3) moved into a tie for second place in the North Central Conference with the Bearcats (8-9), who are now both 4-1, and a game behind Marion. The game was knotted up at 25-25 at half, but the number 14 team in 4A was able to prevail in the end on the road. Anderson got big games from Troy Taylor and Roshown Nunn, who had 23 and 16 points respectively. Muncie Central was led by Ball State recruit Jauwan Scaife with 19 points, while super-soph Jeremiah Davis struggled to seven points and seven boards, with eight turnovers.

Bloomington South 79 - Brownsburg 49 - The host Panthers (16-0) stayed perfect on the year, dismantling last years' champs, the Bulldogs (11-6). With IPFW head coach Dane Fife looking on, South rolled to a big win, allowing many starters to rest up for next week's big tilt with Detroit Country Day. Dee Davis led South with 13 points, eight of them coming in the second quarter, and IU recruit Jordan Hulls added 12 points.

Tipton 65 - Carroll (Flora) 39 - In what was billed as their biggest 2A test yet, the Blue Devils (17-2) turned this one into just another blowout. Carroll (13-2) was the number nine team in 2A, but looked helpless as the superb Tipton defense utterly overwhelmed them. Carroll shot 13-37 from the field, including 1-9 from three point range, to combine for 35% shooting. Indiana University recruit Derek Elston, a 6'9 forward, once again led the way for the winners with another double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while resting much of the fourth. Sophomore point guard Greg Dickey added 14 points, while Carroll was led by Adam and Carson Spesard, each with 13 points.

Ft. Wayne Dwenger 93 - Ft. Wayne North 75 - This unexpected scoring output by the usually-defensive minded Saints (12-4) is a bit of a shocker. Notre Dame football recruit Tyler Eifert had a career night, scoring 32 points, grabbing ten rebounds, dishing out six assists, and getting five steals. Senior guard Justin Jordan led North (11-5) with 27 points, including four three pointers. He is likely to be a spring signee for a D1 school. Dwenger sophomore Tony Springmann, a 6'8 forward, added six points.

Ft. Wayne Snider 84 - Ft. Wayne Blackhawk 54 - The big school pummelled the little school in this one, despite being on the road. The Panthers (17-1) are a top 4A squad, and they showed why tonight. Reggie Hearn led Snider with 23 points, and big man Brad Sneary added 13 of his own. Blackhawk 6'7 junior sniper Russell Byrd, a Michigan State recruit, led the way for Blackhawk with 15 points.

Decatur Central 54 - Franklin Central 50 - P-Hoops called the upset! The Hawks (15-3) overcame an eight point deficit to begin the fourth quarter and beat the visiting Flashes (16-4), who are the number-12 ranked team in 4A. Senior do-it-all forward Blake Beasley led the way for DC, scoring 19 points in the comeback. He should certainly be mentioned as a candidate for Indiana All-Star, in P-Hoops' opinion. Purdue recruit Patrick Bade scored 19 points in the losing effort. HUGE statement win for the Hawks!

Munster 54 - Gary West Side 52 - This game was a tale of two halves as Munster (15-1) came back from eleven down to win at home against the Cougars (12-4). The Mustangs got 16 points from Krste Ruiz, twelve of them coming in the decisive fourth quarter. West junior Xavier Jones proved why he is such a hot commodity, scoring well over half of his team's points, finishing with 30 on the night. DeShawn Clay chipped in with 14 in the loss.

Howe 70 - Arlington 64 - The rematch of bitter IPSAC rivals went the other way this time, with the Hornets (11-6) getting revenge for their City Tourney loss to the Golden Knights (10-9). Without a contribution from 6'9 junior Jordan Manuel, other players had to pick up the slack for Howe, and little-used Johnny Adams answered the bell to the tune of a team-high 15 points. PJ Boutte and Andre Hampton added 14 and 12 points respectively for the Hornets. Arlington got a game-high 19 points from senior guard Phillip Freeman in the loss.

Southport 66 - Broad Ripple 57 - The slide continues for the talented Rockets (7-9), losing this time at the hands of the Cardinals (10-6). The showdown of top freshman did live up to the hype, as Broad Ripple's Ron Patterson scored a game-high 18 points, and Southport's Kellon Thomas scored twelve. The Rockets also got 18 from senior Howard Stevenson and sophomore Steven Jamison added 15 in the losing effort. Ripple has now lost four straight, while Southport has won four of five.

Bluffton 65 - Leo 54 (OT) - This game of Ft. Wayne area powers met expectations and had to be decided in overtime. The final frame did in the Lions (12-4), who spent all their energy coming back from 17 down in regulation to send it into extra time. Bluffton (17-2), the number three team in 2A, outscored Leo 11-0 in overtime. The Tigers were led by Jared Johnson's twenty points, and Cody Cochran added 19 of his own. Leo's Jordan Bowerman led the way with 12 points in the loss.

Merrillville 59 - Chesterton 38 - With IU head coach Tom Crean looking on, apparently watching Chesterton 6'9 sophomore Mitch McGary, the Pirates (12-5) took down the home Trojans (9-7). Superb defense and a commanding 36-18 rebounding edge by Merrillville sent Chesterton to their third consecutive loss. McGary was harassed into only six points and three rebounds, while Tommy Peller led the way for the Trojans with fifteen. Jeremiah Jones scored 19 points for the winning side.

South Bend Washington 71 - South Bend Riley 68 - This was a true barnburner in every sense of the word. Crosstown rivals. Outstanding records. High talent. All of these combined for a great game in South Bend. Washington got their fourth straight win, led by 25 points from Jourdan Vann and 15 points from Jerron Jamerson. Guard Kennis White also had ten for the winners. Forward Larry King led the way for Riley, scoring 17 points in the loss.

Smith had 30 pts & 28 rebs??? That's amazing! Must have missed a lot of lay-ups - but still.

It wasn't covered in the press - but Blake Beasley hit the game winning 3-pt shot with a few seconds left to beat FC.

Hey p-hoops,

Do you know anything about Cody Zeller's recruitment? Now that he has an IU offer, I wonder if anything has changed. It seems like he and his teammates had a great night against Owen Valley.
