Most of yesterday's scheduled games went off as planned, except for a few schools who were too wimpy to let the kids play. Six of our seven previewed games were played as scheduled, including a huge one-versus-two match-up in southern Indiana. There was also a blowout of EPIC proportions in the Ft. Wayne area. Let's take a look at some recaps of the best games of Tuesday, February 2nd!
Princeton 77 - Evansville Memorial 63 - This game was somewhat closer than the final score indicates. However, the Princeton Tigers (16-0) continued to roll, proving their dominance in the 3A class. The number two team in 3A from Memorial (11-2) would have been beaten worse if not for the fine efforts of Trev Wilgus, who scored 24 points, including 19 in the first half. Memorial was able to keep it close, cutting the lead to two points at 50-48 near the end of the third quarter. But from the last minute of the third until the middle of the fourth, Princeton went on a 24-7 run to put away Memorial for good. Princeton was led by 6'5 sophomore wing Rontray Chavis with 28 points. Princeton has six more games to go to finish with an undefeated regular season.
Forest Park 63 - Tecumseh 53 - The Rangers (9-4), the number fifteen ranked team in 2A, got 17 points from 6'8 Southern Illinois signee Jordan Myers on the way to their ninth win. Trent Theising chipped in with thirteen for Forest Park. Tecumseh (10-5) was led by a game-high 18 points from Kreig Oxley. This game was a big PAC win for the Rangers.
Ft. Wayne Dwenger 48 - Homestead 37 - This defensive battle was won in the end by the Saints (10-4), the number eight ranked team in 3A. Dwenger forward Joe Kosiarek led the team with 18 points and six rebounds as the Saints got a big, local road win over the Spartans (9-5).
Cathedral 81 - Bishop Chatard 69 - This match-up of traditional Indianapolis parochial powers went as scripted with the number seven team in 4A, the Irish (15-1) defeating the undersized Trojans (6-7) on the road. The Irish got another stellar performance from 6'6 senior forward Errick Peck, who put in a solid night's work with 25 points and nine boards. Guards Jarrett Hamilton and Patrick Paligraf both contributed 18 points, while 6'6 Purdue signee Kelsey Barlow added 12 points of his own. Chatard was led by junior guard Aaron Bluitt, who had 19 points.
Carroll 66 - Leo 31 - This game turned into an unexpected blowout as the Lions (11-3) couldn't get anything going for them on the road against the Chargers (12-1). Senior forward, 6'7 Jordan Bowerman, was the only player from Leo to reach double figures, scoring 12 points, nine below his season average. Carroll had three double figures scorers and was led by 19 points, including five treys, from senior guard Cam Ginder.
Zionsville 56 - Noblesville 39 - The Eagles (14-1) continue to be the surprise team of the Indianapolis area, winning their eleventh straight game, dismantling a solid Millers (8-5) squad. Junior forward Chris Welker started hot and never looked back. He hit his first eight shots, finishing 9-12 from the field on his way to 22 points. He also added ten rebounds for the host Eagles. Noblesville got 15 points, all on threes, from Andrew Lively. Zionsville's next game will be a real test. They travel to Carmel on Saturday to face a 9-4 Greyhounds team who has won back-to-back games over Ben Davis and Terre Haute South, the number six team in 4A.
Covenant Christian vs. Heritage Christian - Postponed till Monday, February 9th.
Other notable performances from Tuesday, 2/3:
* Aaron Evans and Kevin Banich both scored 14 points as Roncalli beat Park Tudor, giving Rebels coach Michael Wantz his 100th win as a coach. The Panthers got 22 points from John Arak and 15 from freshman Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell.
* Junior guard and Michigan State recruit Russell Byrd scored 20 points for Blackhawk in a loss to Elmhurst.
* Justin Jordan, a senior guard from Ft. Wayne North Side, scored 22 points including three treys in a loss to Dekalb.
* And the score of the night comes from the Canterbury-White's game, which Canterbury won 136-36!!!!!!! I don't know what the deal was in this game, and if there is bad blood between the schools, but that final is INSANE. Canterbury was led by the coach's son Andy Ottenweller who had 42 points, including 12 three pointers!!! Canterbury hit 20 threes as a team. With the recent drama surrounding the 100-point win from the girl's game in Texas, I have to wonder if there will be any outcry over this outcome...
There you have it! Check back later for more updates on this week's coming games. Have fun on this wonderful holiday, College Football Signing Day!
