Ft. Wayne Blackhawk Christian has become a name synonymous with success in Indiana basketball on the 1A level. Winners of six consecutive Sectional Championships, the Braves have also won three Regionals in that span, reaching the State Finals once, losing to Waldron in 2003-2004. This year, their record was relatively unimpressive, but the competition they played was superb, and they featured one of the best players in the state in 6'6 junior wing Russell Byrd, a Michigan State recruit. Well, the magic ended for Blackhawk last night as they fell in the first round of Sectional play on their home floor to Lakewood Park, 55-52 in overtime. The Braves trailed by nine with a minute to go in regulation when Byrd led them back, converting a pair of threes in that stretch to push the game into overtime. But Lakewood, led by Tommy Strine, scored the first eight in the extra frame to put it out of reach for good. Byrd had 30 points on the night, but it wasn't enough. Strine led the Panthers with 20 points of his own. Below in an article from the Ft. Wayne Journal-Gazette about the game. Enjoy!
