Caston Comets and the Upset Poll

One of the coolest stories has to be from Caston High School in Fulton County. Caston is a tiny town outside of Logansport. The Comets were one of the choices on the P-Hoops Upset Poll of the Week for their Sectional Championship win over Pioneer. Pioneer was 8-13 heading into that game, so you may ask yourself, how can any win be considered an upset over a team with a significantly sub-.500 record? Well, heading into postseason play, tiny Caston was 1-19 on the season. While the West Central Sectional teams have a combined 34-96 record, with Pioneer being the winningest among all six squads, Caston's win is nonetheless a huge upset. The Comets won their three sectional games by a combined five points, including the semifinals and final game, which were both one-point wins. Their reward? Facing the mighty Bowman Academy Eagles, the number two ranked team in 1A, with a record of 18-3. Two of their losses were actually wins, which they had to forfeit for playing an ineligible player. They weren't the winners of the P-Hoops Poll this week, but their story is amazing, regardless. Check out the included link to read a more comprehensive blog on Caston!

The actual winners of the Upset Poll were the Royals of Hamilton Southeastern, who got their first ever Sectional Championship by beating the mighty Carmel Greyhounds, a team who has had relative dominance in the Noblesville Sectional. Congrats to the Royals, and best of luck with Lawrence North!

The poll for the next two days deals with which number one ranked team could be upset by a lower ranked squads in Regional play. The choices? Bloomington South, the 4A leader, begins play against New Albany and could then play the winner of Evansville Harrison and Terre Haute South. In 3A, Princeton kicks their day off with Edgewood, and then could play the winner of Salem and Washington. The 2A top team, Tipton, begins against Bishop Luers and then has a chance to play the winner of North Miami and Carroll (Flora). Finally, in 1A, Jac-Cen-Del begins against Clay City and then could play the victor of Bethesda Christian and Waldron. Who has the highest chance of being dethroned? Vote for your choice on the P-Hoops Poll!
