Bowman Academy Wants Do-Over

Bowman Academy was coasting in it's regional semifinal game against Caston, a game which they won 55-28, when the unthinkable happened. Star freshman DaJuan Marrero was whistled for two technical fouls, one for a dunk in which he was ruled to hang on the rim and one for slapping the glass on an attempted block, which resulted in an automatic one-game suspension per IHSAA rules. Marrero therefore had to sit out the regional final game against the third ranked Triton Trojans, which Bowman lost 60-58. Eagles head coach Marvin Rea believes that the technicals were unwarranted, but more than that, they were not unsportsmanlike in any way. The rule's wording in the written law states that the techs must be "unsportsmanlike" to result in the automatic suspension. Currently, IHSAA commish Blake Ress believes that any and all technicals are unsportsmanlike, and therefore Marrero's suspension was upheld. Rea doesn't buy it. He wants a chance to play Triton again, with his full squad, something that is highly unlikely to occur. I've included a link with the story about Rea and the rematch. Check out the videos to the right that show the dunk and the slap and form your own opinion. Mine? The techs should not have been called, either of them. He did not hang too long after the dunk, and if he hung at all, it was because there were two Comets beneath him. And the slap is in no way malicious, in my humble opinion. Take a look.

At this years rules interpretation meeting, which is required attendance for all officials and at least one representative coach from each school, this was a point of emphasis topic. It was even covered by a powerpoint visual display. "A player who strikes the backboard in a legitimate attempt to block a try for goal should not be penalized. Basket interference cannot be ruled in either of the above situations." You can read the entire point of emphasis article on the link below as it is straight off of the IHSAA web site:

http://www.ihsaa.org/b-basketball_frame.htm

In the video of the play, you can clearly see the defensive player "getting his steps" and timing the offensive players move to go for the blocked shot attempt. The official blew this one.

I have read where people are saying this kind of play is undisciplined, etc. Players make plays and this kid is a player. Instincts take over and he made a good play. The player has had some games where he had 10+ blocks. Again, this official blew it and he needs to admit it.

Look at what happened at the Barr-Reeve game last weekend? Then the officials sprint off the court without at least confirming the call. For those of you that do not know, scoring errors, mistakes in the score book, etc. can be changed/corrected until ALL three of the officials have left the visual confines of the court.

At the 2A state championship game last year, one team was charged a technical foul because the official scorer did not copy one teams lineup card down correctly that he had been given. That ended up being a two point game.

It is a game, but these kids deserve better than an official being the cause of winning or losing, or in the Bowman case, even being given a fair chance.

Completely agree with you "another ref". On top of that, that hanging on the rim should've been a no call. I don't know if this kids other antics caused the quick T's but wow that was bad.
No way can you replay a game though. Sorry!

I agree, you cannot replay the game. And regardless of the mistakes, you cannot penalize Triton for winning a basketball game either. That would be just as bad for them as what was done to Bowman.

Coaches and Athletic Directors have to take the time to seriously vote for each of the officials that they know. There are too many good refs that I know that say they do not even apply for the tournament because it is "too political". I disagree with that. If all officials apply, and all coaches/AD's vote, then the IHSAA should get the best officials for the games.

You know, I rarely get any "musings" from you P. I think that would really spruce up the page.

Who do you like in the college tourney? What is your favorite movie? Where do you like to eat in Indy? What ticks you off?

Just a suggestion...I know these are all things I've wondered in the past!
