Top Team Preview: Cathedral

Another team expected to make a run for this years' 4A title is Cathedral, an Indianapolis area parochial school. Playing in one of the toughest sectionals in the state, the Irish do not have a lot of postseason accolades despite their outstanding regualr season success. Coach Scott Hicks, an Indiana basketball legend in his own right, returns a loaded squad from last years' 21-3 squad that was bounced in the first round of sectionals by Lawrence North.

Leading the way for Cathedral is 6'6" small forward Kelsey Barlow, another Purdue recruit from the Indianapolis area. The senior is a nationally regarded recruit due to his versatility, a trait that will suit him well this season and in the future for Matt Painter's Boilermakers. Barlow is a true slasher with an improving outside shot. When inspired, he defends well with his length and athleticism. Another bright spot for the Irish is 6'6" rugged power forward Errek Peck, a senior. Peck is beginning to receive interest from D1 schools, including Butler, Evansville, Penn State, and, you guessed it, Purdue. Peck is cut from the mold of guys like Jason Maxiell, undersized, but with great strength, athleticism, and a non-stop motor. If Peck can consistently bring those talents on a nightly basis, expect high major offers to come his way. Coach Hicks' crew lost some talented seniors last year, including guards Sean Esposito and David McMahon, who were long time standouts for the Irish. Their eligibility seemed never-ending, much like how Hoosier fans remember guys like Jess Settles. Sharpshooting guard, senior Patrick Paligraf, will offset some of the sting of their loss. He is an efficient point guard who cannot be left open with his proficiency from deep. Florida Gator offensive line recruit, Kyle Koehne, will provide bulk in the middle and a defensive presence.

Coach Hicks' Irish team will be looking to avenge past postseason losses this year to make a deep run in March, starting by getting out of their killer sectional.
